At least 10 people sustained injuries on Sunday afternoon during a chaotic fire outbreak at Ritz Junction in Madina, which escalated further when an armed man allegedly opened fire on bystanders.
One of the injured, Ernest Opare—currently receiving treatment at Pentecost Hospital along with four others—spoke to Adom News, confirming he was hit by bullets in the forehead, back, and buttocks.
According to Opare, the gunman—known only by the alias “Area”—arrived at the scene in a highly agitated state and began firing a pump-action shotgun indiscriminately, including into the air, even in the presence of police and fire personnel.
He alleged that officers on the scene did not intervene or attempt to apprehend the shooter, despite witnessing the incident firsthand. The motive behind the gunman’s actions remains unknown.
Simultaneously, the fire—which is believed to have originated from a washing bay—engulfed over 50 wooden structures and metal containers, rendering many residents homeless.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly, with teams from the Madina Fire Station leading efforts to control the blaze.
