Former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of the Policy Evaluation and Oversight Unit under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has cautioned the current NDC administration, led by President John Dramani Mahama, to take urgent action against illegal mining—or face potential electoral defeat in 2028.

In an interview with Joy News on Thursday, July 17, Dr. Aidoo stressed that Ghanaians will not tolerate broken promises, particularly on the issue of galamsey, which continues to ravage farmlands, pollute water bodies, and endanger rural livelihoods.

“If the goodwill the NDC received is wasted, it will be because of inaction on galamsey and corruption. The government must fulfill its promises. Ghanaians won’t accept being taken for granted,” he said.

He contrasted the current administration with the previous NPP government, accusing former President Akufo-Addo of failing to address the illegal mining crisis and urging President Mahama to avoid repeating that mistake.

“Akufo-Addo didn’t care. But Mahama must. If the government doesn’t tackle galamsey seriously, the people will reject the NDC in 2028,” he warned.

Dr. Aidoo argued that the administration has ample time to act and that meaningful change is possible within a short period.

“Six months is enough to make progress. Initiatives like the Blue Water Guards and GoldBoard Taskforce are good, but the illegal mining must stop,” he concluded.
