Ghana Abstains in UN Vote on LGBTQ+ Rights Mandate

- Akwasi Addai Odike urges President Mahama to clearly address LGBTQ+ issues
- Odike stresses importance of safeguarding Ghana’s cultural and moral values
- Calls on citizens to remain alert and hold leaders accountable
Akwasi Addai Odike, founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take a decisive and clear position on LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana.
His remarks come in the wake of Ghana’s abstention from a United Nations Human Rights Council vote on July 7, 2025, regarding the renewal of the mandate for the Independent Expert tasked with protecting LGBTQ+ rights.
Out of the 47-member council, 29 voted in favour, 15 opposed, and Ghana was among three countries that abstained.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning program, Dwaso Nsem, Odike criticized both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), labeling them as “birds of the same feather” who make grand promises during campaigns but fail to follow through once in office.
He stated, “During the campaign, Mahama promised to sign the LGBTQ+ bill into law, but now he offers excuses, claiming the bill has expired. This is why many Ghanaians lost trust in the NPP as well. Issues like LGBTQ+ rights and galamsey are major concerns for the people, and Mahama must take a firm stand. Don’t make promises you cannot keep.”
Odike called on Ghanaians to stay vigilant and hold their leaders accountable in order to safeguard the nation’s cultural and moral values.
“We must rise as Ghanaians and resist this. Ghana needs protection from LGBTQ influences.”
