Friday, July 4 Declared Public Holiday for Republic Day

- Government declares Friday, July 4, 2025, a public holiday to observe Republic Day
- Holiday shift follows passage of Public Holidays (Amendment) Bill, 2025
- July 1 remains Republic Day and will be marked as a Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving
The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of the Interior, has officially declared Friday, July 4, 2025, a public holiday in observance of Republic Day.
This announcement fulfills a campaign promise by the Mahama-led administration to restore July 1 as a statutory public holiday, recognizing its historic significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens’ Day in Ghana.
Although Republic Day falls on Tuesday, July 1, the observance has been moved to Friday, July 4, following the recent passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in Parliament. The new amendment mandates that public holidays falling midweek (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays) be observed on the nearest Friday to ensure greater public participation.
In a statement, the Ministry explained:
“The general public is hereby informed that Tuesday, July 1, 2025, is Republic Day. However, His Excellency the President, by Executive Instrument (E.I.) and in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601), has declared Friday, July 4, 2025, as a public holiday.”
Additionally, July 1 will be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, offering Ghanaians a moment to reflect on the nation’s journey and express gratitude for its progress.
