The tragic accident that occurred on Monday, June 23, 2025, near Winneba Junction has claimed additional lives, with three injured schoolchildren confirmed dead, raising the total number of fatalities to four.
The victims were among seven pupils being transported in a Hyundai Jet taxi (registration CR 748-20) from Winneba to Apam. The taxi collided head-on with a Toyota RAV4 (registration GN 5505-18) shortly after the junction on the Winneba–Mankessim highway.
The taxi driver died instantly in the crash, and nine others—mostly schoolchildren—were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for urgent care.
Winneba Municipal Fire Commander, DO2 Fredrick Adu-Roku, confirmed to Adom News that three of the critically injured children died early Tuesday morning, despite medical intervention. The deceased were students of St. Paul’s School and Uncle Rich Preparatory School, both based in Winneba.
According to DO2 Adu-Roku, preliminary investigations suggest the Toyota RAV4 was attempting an overtaking manoeuvre when it collided with the oncoming taxi.
He emphasized that reckless overtaking and driver error are among the leading causes of road accidents in Ghana, attributing nearly 70% of such incidents to human error. He urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations.
On the day of the incident, fire personnel led by STNO II Nyarko responded swiftly to the emergency, arriving at the scene within minutes. They extricated the body of the deceased taxi driver from the wreckage.
The Hyundai Jet taxi was completely destroyed, while the Toyota RAV4 suffered significant front-end damage. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
