The 2025 BECE Starts Today

- BECE runs from June 11 to June 18, 2025
- 603,328 students participating: 297,250 males and 306,078 females
- Exams held in 2,237 centres, plus 14 for private candidates
The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) begins today, Wednesday, June 11, and will continue through to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), a total of 603,328 candidates have registered for this year’s exams. This number includes 297,250 boys and 306,078 girls from 20,395 schools nationwide.
WAEC highlighted that this represents a 5.99% increase over the 569,236 candidates who registered in 2024. Additionally, 1,661 private candidates—comprising 858 males and 803 females—will take part in the exams, reflecting a 19.49% rise from the 1,390 private candidates in 2024.
The exams will be conducted at 2,237 centres across the country, with 14 extra centres—mostly in regional capitals—set aside for private candidates.
WAEC also noted that this will be the last year private candidates will take the BECE using the old syllabus.
