Three lives were lost in the Adentan Municipality of the Greater Accra Region following a torrential downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ella Esiman Nongo, confirmed the fatalities in an interview with Citi FM, noting that the incidents occurred in Lakeside-Nanakrom and New Legon.
“We lost two individuals in Lakeside, including a four-year-old girl in Nanakrom, and another man in New Legon,” she revealed.
Madam Nongo further stated that while emergency teams were able to rescue several residents in Ashiyie, many others remain vulnerable due to unplanned construction and inadequate drainage infrastructure.
“People are building on waterways, leaving rainwater with no path to drain. That’s one of our biggest challenges,” she said.
She stressed the need for stricter enforcement of building codes and long-term structural solutions to prevent recurring flood-related disasters.
“If we don’t address the indiscipline in our construction practices and enforce existing regulations, these tragedies will continue,” she warned.
The flooding also caused major disruptions, submerging roads and cutting off access to areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, Tema, and surrounding communities.
