Dr. Kennedy Slams Mahama Over Supreme Court Nominations

Story Highlights

  • Calls move hypocritical, citing Mahama's past criticism of Akufo-Addo for similar action
  • Kennedy slams both NPP and NDC for double standards

Physician and politician Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy has criticized President John Mahama for nominating seven Court of Appeal justices to the Supreme Court, calling the move hypocritical.

Dr. Kennedy pointed out that Mahama had previously condemned former President Akufo-Addo for similar actions, questioning why he would now do the same. The nominations, announced on April 29, 2025, include Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.

The move has sparked backlash, especially from the NPP, which claims it’s a hidden attempt to push a third-term agenda. Dr. Kennedy echoed concerns about political inconsistency, saying, “This is why people don’t trust politicians. Both sides are guilty of double standards.”

He also raised concerns about the cost of maintaining an expanded bench amid economic hardship, questioning the logic of having nearly 22 Supreme Court judges in a country with limited resources.
