Kenyan Photographer Sentenced to 50 Years for Murder of LGBTQ+ Activist
- Kenyan photographer jailed 50 years for murder
- Victim was LGBTQ+ activist Edwin Chiloba, 25
- Court finds killing was "diabolical" and premeditated
A Kenyan court has handed down a 50-year prison sentence to photographer Jacktone Odhiambo for the murder of his housemate, Edwin Kiprotich Kipruto, a 25-year-old fashion designer and LGBTQ+ activist. The sentence was delivered by Judge Reuben Nyakundi, who described the killing as “diabolical” in nature.
Edwin Chiloba, as the victim was popularly known, was found dead in a metal box on the roadside in Eldoret nearly two years ago. The murder sent shockwaves through the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya, with many calling for justice.
According to the court, Odhiambo showed no remorse for the killing, but broke down in tears after the sentence was read out. “I have considered all factors and found that Odhiambo was a vengeful person who committed the killing of his close friend,” Judge Nyakundi stated.
Chiloba and Odhiambo had been housemates living near the University of Eldoret, where Chiloba was a student. There were reports that the two men were in a relationship, although the court did not make any findings on the motive behind the killing.
The prosecution, led by Mark Mugun, presented evidence from 23 witnesses, including DNA tests that linked Odhiambo to the crime scene. The evidence revealed that Odhiambo had splurged Chiloba’s money after killing him and had also sexually assaulted the victim before taking his life.
A post-mortem examination indicated that Chiloba had died from asphyxiation, caused by smothering. His body was found with socks stuffed into his mouth and a piece of denim tied around his face. The court’s verdict brings closure to the case, but the LGBTQ+ community in Kenya continues to demand greater protection and justice for its members.
