A devastating incident occurred on Monday, October 28, 2024, at approximately 14:00 hours, when a man believed to be in his early 60s fell to his death from the Lower Volta Bridge on the ECOWAS highway at Sokpoe in the South Tongu District.

The yet-to-be-identified victim’s body has been deposited at the Sogakope District Hospital Mortuary, following reports to the Sogakope District Police Command.

Eyewitnesses recounted the tragic events to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stating that this marked the third such incident in the past three years. According to eyewitnesses, the deceased had alighted from a commercial motorcycle at Sokpoe, walked back to climb the bridge, and suddenly jumped into the river.

“We thought he had forgotten something and wanted to go back for it, but he jumped into the river before we could intervene,” eyewitness Godwin revealed.

Fishermen in the area swiftly responded to rescue him but unfortunately found him dead.

Edmund Fingeroo Dickah, Assembly Member for the Sokpoe Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to the GNA, noting that the deceased was unfamiliar in the area. No missing person reports matching his description have been filed.

Mr. Dickah disclosed that an unspecified amount of money and a handkerchief were found in the victim’s pockets. Witnesses reported seeing him with a male handbag before jumping, which was missing when the body was retrieved.

“The deceased wore a blue-black kaftan and a necklace, appearing well-dressed and responsible,” Mr. Dickah observed.

He appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid in identifying the deceased or locating his family.
