Tragedy Strikes in Ashanti Region as Five Drown in Owabi River Incident

All five victims of a tragic drowning incident in the Owabi River at Akropong in the Ashanti Region have been identified, following a harrowing accident on Tuesday morning.

The deceased include Helena Yasan, a 40-year-old seamstress; 28-year-old plumber Boamah Gyasi Eric; 41-year-old teacher Rita Agyare; and 10-year-old pupil Lordina Yasan. However, the fifth victim, a 5-year-old girl named Doreen Yasan, remains missing.

Rescue efforts have intensified with the assistance of local divers as search teams work diligently to locate Doreen.

The victims were traveling in an Opel saloon car when it veered off the Dabaa-Akropong road and plunged into the Owabi River, which had overflowed its banks due to recent heavy rains.

Eyewitnesses reported that the car quickly submerged in the river. A rescue team comprising personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Fire Service, and the Police worked tirelessly for hours to recover the bodies of the four individuals.
