Only one doctor remains at Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital following a days-long Israeli raid, according to Dr. Khalil Daqran, a spokesman for the Hamas-run health ministry. In a video statement, Dr. Daqran urged international organizations to send medical staff to the hospital, saying patients were bleeding to death due to lack of proper care.

“The army stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital, causing widespread destruction: setting large parts on fire, destroying the hospital’s entrances, and demolishing surrounding walls,” Dr. Daqran said. “Patients and medical staff were assaulted, with many patients and companions arrested, along with most of the medical staff. The fate of 30 medical personnel remains unknown.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed it had completed a “precise operation against a Hamas terrorist stronghold” in the hospital. The IDF claimed the hospital was used by Hamas, but local health officials deny these allegations.

The Israeli raid injured medics and killed patients at the hospital, health officials said. The Israeli army published a video purporting to show the interrogation of an ambulance driver who had worked at Kamal Adwan Hospital. In the video, the driver says Hamas militants operated in the hospital and used ambulances to transport militants.

The northern Gaza Strip is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with hundreds of thousands of civilians living in increasingly desperate conditions. Dr. Daqran described the situation as “catastrophic: there is no water, food or baby formula. Infrastructure has been decimated, sewage and waste are piling up among the residents, leading to the spread of disease and epidemics.”

UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned Israel’s actions, stating: “The Israeli military is subjecting an entire population to bombing, siege and risk of starvation… We are facing what could amount to atrocity crimes, including potentially extending to crimes against humanity.” Türk also criticized Palestinian armed groups for operating among civilians, putting them in harm’s way.

Many Palestinians believe Israel is implementing the so-called “Generals’ Plan,” which would forcibly displace 400,000 civilians from northern Gaza to the south, followed by a siege of remaining Hamas fighters. The Israeli military denies this plan, insisting they prioritize civilian safety.

Israel launched its campaign to destroy Hamas in response to the group’s attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages. The Gaza health ministry reports over 42,000 people have been killed since then.
