Speaker Bagbin Adjourns House Indefinitely Over Vacant Seats
- Ghana's Parliament adjourned indefinitely
- Speaker Alban Bagbin cites lack of quorum
- Move follows controversy over 4 vacant seats
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, announced an indefinite adjournment of the House on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, amid ongoing controversy surrounding the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant.
In his remarks, Speaker Bagbin attributed the adjournment to the House lacking the necessary quorum to conduct its business for the day. However, he did not specify the number of lawmakers present during the session.
The Speaker also noted that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court regarding a stay on the execution of the declaration of the vacant seats. This decision followed a tumultuous morning in the Chamber, characterized by disputes between Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the composition of the Majority.
Notably, NPP MPs left the chamber prior to the Speaker’s arrival, which contributed to the lack of quorum.
As a result of this adjournment, several important government matters, including the vote on the first quarter budget for 2025, remain unresolved and in limbo.
