The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Directorate has issued a health alert after confirming two cases of cholera within the municipality and is currently awaiting results for additional suspected cases.

Dr. Esther Priscilla Biamah Danquah, the Municipal Health Director, shared this update in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday. She confirmed that the two cases were identified late last week and noted that multiple suspected cases have been reported from various communities in the area.

Dr. Danquah emphasized that health teams are on high alert and highlighted the importance of public education regarding cholera prevention. She stated that proper hygiene practices and environmental sanitation are crucial in preventing the disease’s spread. “Cholera is primarily spread through contaminated water and food, so we need to educate our residents on maintaining personal and food hygiene, as well as proper disposal of waste,” she remarked.

In response to the situation, the Municipal Health Directorate is implementing measures to contain the outbreak. These include distributing chlorine for water treatment and conducting public health campaigns in affected areas. Dr. Danquah indicated that her office is collaborating closely with the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly to manage the situation effectively and prevent further spread of cholera throughout the municipality.

She urged the Assembly and community leaders to support health officials in ensuring that residents adhere to health protocols and maintain proper sanitation practices. Dr. Danquah also advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe diarrhoea or vomiting, which are common indicators of cholera.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) initially reported the cholera outbreak in the Ada East and Ada West Districts on October 11, 2024, where a total of nine cases have been recorded.
