Ghanaian reggae artist Blakk Rasta has thrown his hat into the ring for the 67th Grammy Awards, submitting his album “Salaga Soljah” for consideration in the Best Reggae Album category.
Notably, “Salaga Soljah” is the only African reggae album vying for nomination, standing out among over 75 eligible submissions. Other prominent contenders include Vybz Kartel’s “Party With Me”, The Wailers’ “Evolution”, UB40’s “UB45”, and compilations like “Jamaica Festival Song 2024 Competition” and “Celebrating Jamaica 62”.
The Recording Academy defines the Best Reggae Album category as recognizing “excellence in albums of reggae music, including roots reggae, dancehall, and ska.” Eligible albums must feature more than 75% new reggae recordings, with contributors qualifying for nomination if they participated in over 50% of the project.
“Salaga Soljah” is a unique, live-recorded twenty-track album, showcasing Blakk Rasta’s linguistic versatility in English, French, and several African languages, including Dioula, Dagbani, Hausa, Sissala, Akan, and Gruni.
The nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards will be unveiled on November 8, 2024, ahead of the main ceremony on February 2, 2025.
