An Israeli artillery attack on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza’s Nuseirat camp has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people, according to officials. The Gaza Civil Defence Agency reported that entire families were killed, and dozens more were wounded in the strike, which occurred on Sunday.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that they are investigating the incident. However, this is not the only recent attack in the region. Earlier, five children were killed by a drone strike while playing on a street corner in northern Gaza’s al-Shati camp.
A civil defence spokesman confirmed that the attack on al-Mufti school, which housed hundreds of displaced individuals, injured at least 50 people and killed over a dozen. The main conflict areas in Gaza have been in the north, where Israeli forces have intensified attacks as part of a major ground operation.
Residents of Beit Hanoun, Jabalia, and Beit Lahiya reported being cut off from nearby Gaza City, with Israeli tanks spotted on the outskirts of the territory’s largest city. Hospitals in the area are facing supply shortages, although the World Health Organisation and Red Cross have managed to resupply two hospitals after nine days of attempts.
The five children killed in northern Gaza were reportedly struck by an Israeli air strike while playing on a street corner. Graphic images from the scene show the bloodied bodies of young teenage boys, one clutching glass marbles.
An aunt of one of the victims, Rami, paid tribute to him on social media, stating that the family had moved to al-Shati seeking safety after being forced to leave their Jabalia homes.
The IDF has not commented on the incident. The Hamas-run health ministry has reported over 42,000 deaths in the past year, with approximately 1.9 million Gazans displaced – many forced to move multiple times to escape.
The conflict began after Hamas launched an attack on northern Israel on October 7 last year, killing 1,200 people and taking over 200 hostages in Gaza.
