  • Akufo-Addo criticized for using state funds despite initial personal pledge.

Sam George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has strongly condemned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the $54 million spent on the stalled National Cathedral project. In a recent interview, George criticized the President for using state funds, contrary to his initial claim that he would personally fund the project as a pledge to God.

George argued that Akufo-Addo misled Ghanaians by failing to disclose his intention to use public funds. This, George believes, has entangled God’s name in the controversy surrounding the project, which has been marred by corruption.

The lawmaker questioned the President’s actions, stating, “When President Akufo-Addo said he made a pledge to God, that pledge didn’t involve using state funds.” George expressed discomfort with the use of public funds, especially considering the project’s association with corruption.

George emphasized that the corruption surrounding the National Cathedral undermines its original purpose and tarnishes the President’s pledge to God. He lamented, “Why would you take $54 million and dig a hole? Why would you have all the corruption… all in the name of God?”

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah, chairman of the board, recently announced that construction on the National Cathedral project is set to resume. This follows a meeting between the Board of Directors and auditors from Deloitte, which cleared the way for construction to continue.

Despite contributions from various church denominations totaling GH¢2.21 million ($164,000), the project remains stalled. Ghana’s taxpayers have expended $58 million over the last seven years, with an estimated $450 million needed to complete the project.

The National Cathedral project has been plagued by controversy, with many questioning the allocation of state funds. George’s criticism highlights the growing concern among Ghanaians.

The project’s resumption sparks debate about its prioritization amidst the country’s economic challenges. Critics argue that the funds could be better allocated to address pressing national issues.

As construction resumes, the National Cathedral’s future remains uncertain. The project’s completion hinges on securing the remaining funds, which remains a significant challenge.

The controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project continues to simmer, with many Ghanaians eagerly awaiting its resolution.
