Organised Labour has declared a nationwide strike effective October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to address their demands concerning illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The decision was made during an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, October 8, where organised labour expressed frustration over the government’s inaction. A deadline had been set for the end of September for the government to take decisive measures against galamsey.

Galamsey has devastating effects on Ghana’s environment and livelihoods. Organised Labour argues that immediate action is necessary to curb these illegal mining activities.

Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), issued a statement announcing the strike. “Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike.”

The strike, effective October 10, 2024, calls on all workers to stay at home and refrain from work. This collective action aims to pressure the government into taking immediate action against galamsey.

Ansah emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing the destructive impact of galamsey on Ghana’s natural resources and communities.

Organised Labour’s demands include increased enforcement, community engagement, and sustainable mining practices. The government’s inaction has led to widespread frustration among workers and citizens.

The strike is expected to impact various sectors, including healthcare, education, and transportation. Organised Labour urges workers to stand united in demanding change.

Ghana’s galamsey crisis has drawn national attention, with concerns over environmental degradation, water pollution, and economic losses. Organised Labour’s strike underscores the need for collective action.
