The Ghanaian government is set to launch solar-powered outboard motors for fishermen across the country in October, announced Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. This innovative initiative aims to alleviate the challenges associated with premix fuel, which has long plagued the artisanal fisheries sector .
The pilot program will commence in Elmina, within the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Constituency of the Central Region, next month. During this phase, fishermen will receive training on operating the solar-powered motors.
Dr. Bawumia, also the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), shared the news with Elmina’s chiefs and people during his constituency tour on September 24.
For years, the high cost, shortage, and smuggling of premix fuel have hindered the fisheries sector’s growth. The solar-powered outboard motors are designed to address these issues and provide a sustainable solution.
The new motors will be sold to fishermen on hire purchase, making them affordable and accessible. This move is expected to revolutionize Ghana’s fishing sector, reducing fuel costs and minimizing environmental impact.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the solar-powered motors will eliminate the need for premix fuel. “You will no longer need premix anymore because God will give it to you every day with the sun,” he assured.
A treasury scheme will also be implemented to support the fishermen, reducing problems associated with fuel acquisition.
The introduction of solar-powered outboard motors aligns with Ghana’s efforts to leverage renewable energy. The country has already made strides in solar energy, including the launch of a 5 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system at the Bui hydropower station.
This eco-friendly initiative is expected to transform the fishing industry, enhancing the livelihoods of fishermen and contributing to a more sustainable environment.
