Ghana’s Democracy in the Balance: NPP Signals Protest if EC Caves to NDC Pressure
- The NPP plans to protest if the EC agrees to the (NDC's demand
- The NDC alleges significant irregularities in the provisional voters register
- Both parties are escalating their rhetoric
Justin Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned that the party will protest if the Electoral Commission (EC) agrees to the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) request for an independent forensic audit of the 2024 provisional voters register.
In a post on his official X page on September 19, 2024, he stated, “If the EC accepts the NDC’s position, the NPP will also take to the streets.”
This comes on the heels of the NDC’s nationwide “Enough is Enough” demonstration on September 17, calling for an audit of the voters register, which they claim is riddled with irregularities that threaten the integrity of the upcoming elections.
The NDC alleges over 243,000 unauthorized voter transfers occurred without the consent of the affected individuals, raising concerns about potential misconduct by EC officials.
They argue that these irregularities are not just minor mistakes but indicative of serious manipulation that jeopardizes the credibility of Ghana’s democratic process.
