Fix The Country’ Activist Arrested for Ripping Down Posters at National Cathedral
- Ralph St. Williams (Fellow Ghanaians) arrested at Kotoka International Airport
- Linked to "Enough is Enough" demonstration and criticism of government
- 3. Viral video showed frustration over misuse of public funds (58 million cedis)
A member of the Fix the Country movement, affiliated with Democracy Hub, has been arrested at Kotoka International Airport while traveling to Kumasi. Ralph St. Williams, known as Fellow Ghanaians, was taken into custody ahead of the group’s planned protest on Saturday.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the movement’s convener, announced the arrest via a tweet on X on September 19. He suggested that the arrest was linked to Fellow Ghanaians’ participation in the recent “Enough is Enough” demonstration organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the Electoral Commission.
Barker-Vormawor stated that Ralph’s arrest appears to be a consequence of his peaceful involvement in the protest, where he symbolically highlighted government mismanagement by “opening the National Cathedral pit,” a site that has reportedly cost Ghana 58 million cedis.
A viral video captured the suspect removing posters at the Cathedral project site while voicing his frustration over the misuse of public funds.
The convener of the movement claimed that Ralph St. Williams’s arrest was intended to prevent him from joining the upcoming “Say No to Galamsey” protest and to intimidate activists advocating for transparency and environmental justice. Mr. Barker-Vormawor condemned the arrest and called for the immediate release of their member.
He also demanded an official apology from the authorities, labeling the arrest a blatant attempt to silence critical voices. In addition, he announced that the group would be submitting a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police to address the situation.
