“I Unfortunately Can’t Carry My Own Children” – Selena Gomez

Story Highlights
  • Selena Gomez unable to carry own children due to health issues
  • Lupus and bipolar disorder treatment pose pregnancy risks
  • Surrogacy and adoption options being considered by Gomez

Selena Gomez has opened up about her inability to carry her own children, sharing the emotional impact this revelation has had on her. In a cover interview with Vanity Fair, the 32-year-old singer and actress disclosed that learning she could not have a safe pregnancy was a significant challenge for her.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez told the publication. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez has been candid about her health struggles in the past. She has lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue. In 2017, she revealed that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to complications related to her lupus. Additionally, Gomez has spoken openly about living with bipolar disorder, a condition that she addressed in her documentary, My Mind and Me.

In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Gomez had hinted at potential difficulties with pregnancy due to the medication she takes for bipolar disorder.

Despite these challenges, Gomez expressed hope for her future family plans. She is now considering surrogacy or adoption as alternatives. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” Gomez said. “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

Gomez also reflected on her gratitude for the opportunities available to those who wish to become parents through different means. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people,” she added. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Currently, Gomez is in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco.
