Jones’ legendary voice as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise remains his most iconic role. Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, Vader’s son, paid tribute on Twitter, saying, “RIP dad.”

A highly acclaimed actor, Jones achieved the rare feat of winning an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards). You gave us your best.”

Jones reprised his role as Mufasa in the 2019 remake of The Lion King, making him the only original voice cast member to do so. Fellow Star Wars actor Samuel L. Jackson praised Jones, saying, “If you were an actor or aspired to be an actor…one of the standards we always had was to be a James Earl Jones.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Jones appeared in numerous films, including Dr. Strangelove, and won numerous awards, including Tonys, Emmys, and a Grammy. He received an honorary Oscar in 2011.

The Washington Post described Jones as “capable of moving in seconds from boyish ingenuousness to near-biblical rage and somehow suggesting all the gradations in between” in a 1987 review of his performance in Fences.
