Community members at Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, are calling for justice following an alleged rape of an 18-year-old girl, whose identity is being withheld, by a man purported to be a military officer.
The incident occurred just days after the young woman had started her new job.
On Monday, September 2, 2024, the accused military officer, who has not been named, checked into the Siim Lina Guest House in Soe, a Bolgatanga suburb, around 9 a.m.
The victim recounted the events, stating that the officer paid GHC150 for a room for the entire day. During his stay, the officer expressed his interest in her, which she declined. Despite her rejection, he continued to make advances, even proposing marriage, which she firmly refused.
The situation escalated when the officer began issuing threats, suggesting that if anyone were to challenge him, there would be consequences. When another woman briefly visited the officer, the victim was attacked while performing her duties.
She described how the officer forcibly dragged her into a different room, where he raped her and took photographs of her in a distressing situation. She remained silent and fearful throughout the ordeal.
Paulina Adongo, the guest house owner, confirmed the incident and reported that neighbors intervened after the victim raised an alarm. Military personnel from the Abilba Barracks arrived at the scene and took the suspect into custody.
Although the military has not yet made an official statement, it is reported that an independent investigation may be underway.
