FDA Issues Urgent Warning on Contaminated Palm Oil
- Some palm oil products on the market are tainted with the banned Sudan Four dye
- The FDA warns of severe health risks
- The FDA has arrested individuals involved in the contamination
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a critical alert advising consumers to be extremely cautious when buying palm oil due to contamination concerns.
This alert is prompted by the FDA’s ongoing battle against the presence of dangerous substances, specifically the prohibited ‘Sudan Four’ dye, found in some palm oil products currently available in the market.
The Sudan Four dye, an industrial coloring agent banned in food products because of its cancer-causing properties, presents a severe health threat to consumers.
Roderick Daddey-Adjei, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the FDA, voiced significant concern over the persistence of this issue, despite the Authority’s stringent enforcement measures.
While acknowledging progress in curbing the spread of tainted palm oil, Daddey-Adjei stressed that any level of contamination remains intolerable.
He warned, “Although we have made strides, the existence of even a minor amount of contaminated palm oil is unacceptable. Those responsible for these illicit activities are still out there, but their days are numbered. We have already made some arrests and handed the cases over to the police.”
