Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has issued a stern reminder to individuals threatening to refuse handing over power after the December elections, stating that they have no choice but to respect the people’s decision.

He emphasized that the Constitution is clear on who holds power – the people – and their choices at the polls must be respected.

During an engagement with the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Journalists Association, Speaker Bagbin assured journalists of Parliament’s commitment to a peaceful electoral process.

He also discussed the legislative process, highlighting the rigorous scrutiny and stakeholder engagement involved in passing controversial bills like the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Bill.

The Speaker’s comments come amidst concerns over veiled threats from some individuals and groups, including the ruling New Patriotic Party, that they may not relinquish power.

However, Bagbin’s statement reaffirms the democratic principles enshrined in the Constitution, ensuring that the people’s will prevails.

The event was part of a public lecture series celebrating 30 years of Parliament and Ghana’s democracy, and was preceded by a meeting with journalists to discuss Parliament’s role in ensuring peaceful elections.
