President Nana Akufo-Addo has underscored the pivotal role of education in driving Ghana’s economic transformation.
During the inauguration of a new educational facility at the University for Development Studies (UDS), the President reiterated his government’s commitment to investing in the education sector to develop a skilled workforce and improve living standards.
“Education is the most powerful tool we have to transform our nation,” the President stated.
He highlighted the government’s significant budgetary allocations to the education sector, totaling over GH₵12.8 billion, as evidence of its commitment to making education a catalyst for national development.
One of the key policies implemented by the Akufo-Addo administration is the “no guarantor policy” for the Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF).
This policy has significantly improved access to tertiary education by removing financial barriers for many students. As a result, tertiary enrollment has increased by over 60 percent since 2016.
The President also emphasized the importance of equipping Ghanaians with the skills and knowledge needed to compete in the global economy.
He highlighted the government’s efforts to promote research and innovation by providing research and book allowances to lecturers.
Akufo-Addo called on universities to strengthen their ties with industry, government, and local communities to ensure that their research and teaching align with societal needs.
By fostering collaboration between academia and the real world, universities can contribute directly to the realization of national development goals.
