NDC Decries Voter Register as Unfit for December Elections

Story Highlights
  • The NDC claims the current voter register is critically flawed
  • Significant discrepancies have been reported
  • The NDC has requested an urgent meeting with the Electoral Commission

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared that the current voter register is inadequate for the upcoming December 7 elections.

The party’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, has criticized the register, citing numerous errors and inconsistencies.

Dr. Tanko Computer contends that the existing register is deeply flawed and unsuitable for use. He described the situation as severe, stating, “The register is fundamentally flawed. It cannot be relied upon for any purpose. The data issues are so critical that some polling stations show inflated voter numbers, which could have serious implications.”

He further explained, “Polling stations are not supposed to have more than 700 voters. However, some are showing over 1,000 voters due to errors in the register. This discrepancy indicates a significant problem with the current data.”

The NDC has raised concerns that these irregularities could undermine the electoral process and has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to address these issues promptly. On August 27, the party formally requested an emergency meeting with the EC to discuss the discrepancies found in the provisional voter register.

The provisional register, provided to political parties during the recent exhibition period, has been flagged by the NDC for containing several inaccuracies. The party argues that these inaccuracies could impact the integrity of the upcoming elections.

In their communication with the EC, the NDC has stressed the urgency of resolving these issues to ensure a fair and credible electoral process. They believe that without corrective measures, the validity of the election results could be questioned.

The NDC’s call for an emergency meeting reflects their concern over the potential impact of these register issues on the election. They are seeking immediate action to address and rectify the identified problems before the polls.

The situation underscores the importance of a reliable voter register for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring that all eligible voters are accurately represented.
