AC Milan’s Groundbreaking Maternity Policy Empowers Women Players

AC Milan captain Christy Grimshaw has hailed the club’s groundbreaking maternity policy, which guarantees contract renewals for players who become pregnant in the final year of their deals.
This policy is the first of its kind in Europe.
“In the past, many women footballers faced the difficult choice between being a mother or a player,” Grimshaw told BBC Sport. “This policy takes that choice away from us. We can feel comfortable and confident in our careers.”
The policy, led by head of women’s football Elisabet Spina, is part of a broader push for improved rights for female players.
FIFA launched new standards to protect pregnant female footballers in May.
Spina emphasized AC Milan’s responsibility as a major club to contribute to the development of women’s football. “I hope this project can help not only women’s football but also women’s sport and female professionals,” she said.
Grimshaw expressed her gratitude for the policy, stating, “It’s an extra special opportunity. Becoming a mother is a beautiful thing, and this policy allows us to embrace both motherhood and our careers.”
