Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as Napo, delivered a heartfelt farewell to the Manhyia South Constituency, marking the end of his 16-year tenure as their Member of Parliament (MP).
In his farewell address, Napo, who has been named the vice-presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), struggled to hold back his emotions as he reflected on his long service.
“Saying goodbye to my beloved Manhyia South is incredibly tough after such a meaningful relationship spanning nearly 16 years,” he told the gathering of NPP members in the constituency.
Napo emphasized the inevitability of change and expressed his deep gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his tenure. “Today, I bid farewell as your MP and extend my heartfelt thanks for your loyalty and support over these years,” he said, visibly moved.
During the event, Napo took the opportunity to personally thank the NPP members, including constituency executives, council of elders, and polling station officials, for their steadfast support. He acknowledged that their encouragement played a crucial role in his rise to a higher political position.
Although he is stepping down as MP, Napo assured constituents that his commitment to Manhyia South would remain.
He urged them to continue supporting his successor, Lawyer Baffuor Awuah, as they had supported him, and proposed that he be honored as the “Abusuapanin,” or head of the family, to maintain his connection with the constituency.
Turning to national politics, Napo criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its leader, former President John Mahama, asserting that the electorate would reject them in favor of renewing the NPP’s mandate in the upcoming elections. He called on voters to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and all NPP parliamentary candidates.
The Manhyia South NPP groups praised Napo for his exceptional leadership and contributions over the years, highlighting his efforts to unify the party and his fatherly role in the community.
Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori-Atta, the NPP Chairman for Manhyia South, noted that the constituency had made history by producing a vice-presidential candidate from its ranks.
