Workers at the Pambros Salt Factory, situated along the Weija Junction stretch, have embarked on a protest against the alleged attempt by traditional authorities to allocate parts of the salt mining area to Chinese business interests. The workers, dressed in red and black attire, chanted slogans and expressed their strong opposition to the move, fearing it would lead to massive job losses.
Over 1,000 workers may lose their jobs if the salt mining area is handed over to the Chinese investors, a prospect that has sparked widespread concern among the employees. Several aggrieved workers spoke to the press, expressing deep concern about the potential impact on their livelihoods and calling for immediate intervention to prevent the takeover.
One worker stated, “We notice that the Chinese people started encroaching on our land. They are destroying our land. We won’t agree since we don’t have anywhere to go.” The worker emphasized the importance of Pambros Salt Factory, saying, “Pambros produces salt, just like Sege, so we are contributing our quota.”
Another worker added, “We even learnt that the Jubilee House spends a lot on salt. So if our jobs are destroyed, how can we support the country as local producers?” The workers are calling on President Akufo-Addo to act on the matter, citing the government’s significant expenditure on salt.
They also expressed fear over the employment of land guards by the alleged investors, describing the situation as “scary” and urging the traditional authority to ensure justice is served. The workers are determined to fight against the alleged takeover, saying, “We must not sit as a country and watch as ordinary Ghanaians suffer. It is unfair to give our land to the Chinese.”
