KNUST Vice Chancellor Faces Contempt Charges Amid Reappointment Dispute

Story Highlights
  • Contempt charges filed against KNUST VC and officials.
  • Charges allege undermining of justice amid reappointment dispute.
  • Petitioner questions reappointment process and legitimacy.
  • Court of Appeal to hear case on September 4.

Clement Ohene Asare, the petitioner challenging Professor Rita Akosua Dickson’s reappointment as KNUST Vice Chancellor, has initiated contempt of court proceedings against key university officials. The respondents include University Registrar A.K Boateng, University Council Chairman Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, and Prof. Dickson herself.

Ohene Asare alleges that these officials have intentionally undermined the administration of justice by allowing Prof. Dickson to continue as Vice Chancellor despite the ongoing legal challenge. Prof. Dickson’s tenure was set to end on July 31, 2024, but she remains in office, sparking the contempt charges.

The petitioner argues that the university’s actions demonstrate blatant disregard for the court’s authority, particularly given the pending application to nullify Prof. Dickson’s reappointment. This latest legal development follows the dismissal of Ohene Asare’s original case on July 30, which the High Court deemed lacked merit and capacity as an alumnus to file the suit.

Undeterred, Ohene Asare has appealed the decision, with the Court of Appeal scheduling a hearing for September 4. Prof. Akosua Dickson’s initial appointment as Vice Chancellor was historic, making her the first female to hold the position.

However, her reappointment has been marred by legal challenges, with stakeholders questioning the process and legitimacy of her renewal. The contempt charges add a new layer of complexity to the ongoing legal battle, highlighting the deepening divisions within the university community.
