Spain Duo Banned For Gibraltar Chant
- Spain's Euro 2024 triumph has been overshadowed
- The pair led chants of "Gibraltar is Spanish"
- The players' actions have reignited tensions
Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph has been overshadowed by controversy as captain Alvaro Morata and midfielder Rodri have been handed one-match bans by UEFA.
The pair found themselves in hot water after leading chants of “Gibraltar is Spanish” during the team’s victory celebrations in Madrid.
The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with European football’s governing body over the incident, which they deemed “provocative and insulting.”
UEFA’s disciplinary committee ruled that Morata and Rodri had breached conduct regulations and brought the sport into disrepute.
As a result, they will miss Spain’s upcoming Euro 2024 qualifier against Serbia.
The territorial dispute between Spain and Gibraltar has a long history, with Spain maintaining its claim over the British Overseas Territory.
The players’ actions have reignited tensions between the two nations.
