Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to prioritize special education to alleviate the challenges faced by parents and guardians while enhancing access to education.

In his commitment, Dr. Bawumia announced plans to recruit and train at least 1,000 additional special education teachers, focusing on essential areas such as language, speech therapy, and occupational and behavioral therapy.

He made this pledge while donating laptops to visually impaired teachers and providing Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratories to the Akropong School for the Blind and the Wa Methodist School for the Blind during a ceremony in Akropong, Eastern Region.

Dr. Bawumia explained that this initiative is part of a larger strategy to integrate ICT into the education system, making learning more interactive and accessible for all students. He hopes that these resources will not only boost students’ academic performance but also broaden their career opportunities and personal development.

The Vice-President also indicated that this model would be expanded to other special schools nationwide to ensure inclusive educational excellence.

In May 2022, the Ghana Education Service (GES) introduced a manual titled “Changing Perspectives: Inclusive Schools in Inclusive Communities,” funded by the World Bank and developed by local experts, to guide the training of teachers and support the education of special needs children.
