Kwaku Kwarteng, a former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must accept part of the blame for Ghana’s current economic challenges. According to Kwarteng, although the economic problems did not start with the NPP, the party missed opportunities for reforms that could have helped reset the nation’s economy.
He emphasized that admitting its role in the current situation is one sure way for the NPP to better engage with the electorate and assure them of its readiness to right the wrongs. Kwarteng urged his party to be honest and admit their role in contributing to the current economic situation, which he believes will afford them a better opportunity to win the December elections.
He noted that solving the economic problems requires putting them in context, acknowledging that it is an economic management culture that has been prevalent for a long time. Kwarteng stressed that changing the government or political party alone will not solve the problem, but rather requires a new mindset in the way the political classes relate to the country’s resources.
He called for a discussion on this new mindset, emphasizing that the political class has failed in their responsibility to provide quality leadership that brings prosperity to Ghanaians. Kwarteng emphasized that recognizing and acknowledging past mistakes is crucial, not just for the NPP but for all previous governments.
