The National Media Commission (NMC) has initiated measures to ensure the safety of journalists ahead of the 2024 elections. The Commission is urging media practitioners to remain professional and abide by the code of ethics, emphasizing the need to avoid misleading audiences with unverified information.
The NMC has consistently cautioned against the use of hate speech in the media and actions by journalists as they carry out their duties. According to the Commission, media practitioners must be guided by the ethics of the profession, especially considering the crucial nature of the upcoming general elections.
Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, emphasized the importance of proper verification of information by journalists. Sarpong outlined the Commission’s three key objectives: protecting journalists’ safety, promoting media responsibility, and combating disinformation.
The NMC has inaugurated a Media Advisory Committee to assist journalists and ensure their safety during the elections. Chairman of the NMC, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, urged journalists to avoid relying solely on information from social media without further verification.
