Gold mining giant Newmont has appointed Abdul-Rahman Amoadu as its first Ghanaian Managing Director for Africa. This historic move takes effect on August 1st, 2024.

Amoadu brings a wealth of experience to the role, boasting extensive knowledge in finance, operations, and international trade. His global background coupled with his familiarity with the African continent make him a strong fit to lead Newmont’s business expansion plans.

“Rahman’s unique qualifications make him the ideal candidate to spearhead our efforts in building a premier mining portfolio across Africa,” stated Newmont’s Chief Operating Officer, Natascha Viljoen.

Newmont has a nearly two-decade presence in Africa, with its first commercial mine, Ahafo South, opening in 2006. The company’s Akyem mine followed in 2013, solidifying its position as Ghana’s largest gold producer and leading employer in the mining sector.

Amoadu’s appointment coincides with the ongoing development of Ahafo North, which will become Newmont’s third mine in Ghana. Prior to joining Newmont, Amoadu honed his skills through a successful career at Maersk, working across Africa and Europe in senior management roles.
