“GPRTU Directs Drivers to Maintain Current Fares, Disregard 15% Increase”

Story Highlights
  • GPRTU rejects 15% transport fare hike announced by Transport Operators Association.
  • No fare increase without stakeholder engagement, says GPRTU.
  • Current fare structure remains in place despite rising fuel costs.
  • GPRTU directs drivers to maintain current fares, avoid unrest.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a statement urging the public to disregard the recent announcement of a 15% increase in transport fares by the Transport Operators Association. The association had declared that the fare hike would take effect on Monday, July 22.

However, GPRTU has emphasized that any fare increases can only be implemented after proper stakeholder engagement, which has not yet occurred. The union acknowledges the rising prices of petroleum products and their significant impact on transportation costs but stresses that the current fare structure remains in place.

Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU clarified the union’s position. “We are not coming out with an increment. We are saying no, it is not just any ordinary increment in fuel which attracts fare adjustment.”

Imoro explained that the union had recently increased lorry fares and therefore had not reached a point where another fare hike was necessary. He described the announcement by the Transport Operators Association as “unfortunate” and emphasized that the public should disregard it.

GPRTU is urging commercial transport operators to adhere to the current fare structure and not implement any increases. Imoro stressed that the union follows a laid-down system before any fare adjustments can be made.

He expressed hope that the announcement of the fare increase would be retracted before Monday to avoid potential public unrest between passengers and drivers. “I will be surprised if drivers have increased the fares and are charging. We strongly believe they will retract it even before Monday,” Imoro added.

The GPRTU’s stance is aimed at maintaining stability in the transportation sector and avoiding any unnecessary tension between drivers and passengers. The union is committed to engaging with stakeholders to ensure that any fare adjustments are made in a fair and transparent manner.

The public has been advised to report any instances of drivers charging the purported increased fares to the appropriate authorities. GPRTU is working to ensure that the current fare structure remains in place until further notice.

The development highlights the importance of effective communication and stakeholder engagement in the transportation sector. GPRTU’s proactive approach aims to prevent any confusion or disruption to the public transport system. By emphasizing the need for proper stakeholder engagement, GPRTU is prioritizing the interests of both drivers and passengers, ensuring a harmonious and stable transportation sector in Ghana.
