Ghana Embraces Cylinder Recirculation Model For Safer, More Efficient LPG Use

Story Highlights
  • This model is adopted by many West African countries
  • Abdul-Hamid stressed the importance of modernization
  • The model's benefits beyond safety

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is urging the LPG Marketers Association and other stakeholders to support the new Cylinder Recirculation Model for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) distribution.

This model, already adopted by many West African countries, is seen as the safest and most efficient way to deliver LPG for homes and businesses.

NPA Chief Executive Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid stressed the importance of modernization, highlighting that surrounding countries like Togo and Burkina Faso have successfully implemented the model.

Dr. Abdul-Hamid emphasized the model’s benefits beyond safety. It creates new job opportunities throughout the LPG distribution and circulation chain, offering a promising alternative to the traditional filling station model.

He encouraged stakeholders to look beyond initial concerns and explore these potential advantages.

Under the Cylinder Recirculation Model, residents in designated areas can access pre-filled LPG cylinders at exchange points. Simply register with your National ID card, pay for the gas, and pick up a filled cylinder, eliminating the need for personal ownership.

While some pushback has emerged since the policy’s launch, the government remains committed to collaboration.

Minister of State Herbert Krappa assured that ongoing discussions with stakeholders, including LPG dealers, will help refine and improve the model for everyone’s benefit.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the theme of this year’s Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GhIPCON): “Petroleum downstream; building a future for growth, efficiency and sustainability.”
