Ghana Police Service Denies Secret Recruitment Claims
The Ghana Police Service has responded to allegations made by Wa West Member of Parliament Peter Toobu, stating that they have not commenced any recruitment exercise contrary to the lawmaker’s claims. Toobu, a former Superintendent of Police, had alleged that some individuals were undergoing medicals for recruitment at the Police Training School in Tesano without any public announcement.
In a statement, the Police Service said, “We wish to state that the Police Service has not commenced any exercise of such nature.” The Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, also denied the allegations, stating that the security and intelligence agencies had not started new recruitment into the security service.
Quartey explained that applicants who had already purchased forms were being engaged to ascertain their eligibility. He emphasized that the Ministry of the Interior does not handle recruitment, which is instead done by the security and intelligence agencies themselves.
The Minority in Parliament had threatened to summon Quartey over reports of secret recruitment into the security services. However, Quartey clarified that no new recruitment had begun, and the process was only for those who had already purchased forms to go through the eligibility criteria.
He stated, “We have not started recruitment. I have heard a lot of things out there, but for the record, the Ministry of the Interior does not do recruitment. We are policy drivers. It is the security and intelligence agencies that do the recruitment, and they have criteria for people to meet and the number of people they need. Then the Ministry of Finance will give the approval. Once that approval is given, they go through the process and then they engage.”
