A remarkable incident occurred at the Wenchi Presby School Centre in the Bono Region on July 8, where a 15-year-old pregnant pupil delivered a baby girl while writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The incident happened just minutes before the English Language Paper was about to commence, causing a stir at the examination centre.

Despite the unexpected turn of events, the young girl, a student of the Wenchi Seventh Day Adventist Basic School, was determined to complete her examination. With the help of some women at the centre, who took care of the newborn baby, the girl was able to write the examination.

According to Mrs Mary Nyarko Adutwum, the Wenchi Municipal Director of Education, the candidate was noticed to be in labour, although it was a preterm birth. Fortunately, the baby was in good condition, and the girl was rushed to the hospital after completing the first paper.

When the education director checked on the girl, she and her baby were in stable condition, a testament to the quick response and care provided. This extraordinary incident highlights the determination and resilience of the young girl, who refused to let her circumstances hinder her from completing her examination.

Moreover, it has come to light that nine other pregnant pupils are also writing the BECE in the Wenchi Municipality, a situation that underscores the need for support and care for pregnant students. The incident has drawn attention to the importance of providing adequate care and facilities for pregnant students, ensuring they can complete their education without hindrance.
