A farmer in Banda, Oti Region, has been sentenced to ten years in prison by the Dambai Circuit Court for a vicious assault on his pregnant wife using a cutlass.
Anas Ibrahim, 42, pleaded guilty to charges of assault, inflicting multiple cutlass wounds, and attempted murder before Judge Osman Abdul-Hakeem. The court handed down consecutive sentences of five, seven, and ten years for the respective charges.
According to Detective Chief Inspector S. K. Gavor, the incident occurred on May 28, 2024, when Anas attacked his wife on their farm in Banda.
The assault left the victim with severe injuries, prompting her to be initially treated at Banda Health Centre and later transferred to Kpandai Polyclinic.
An investigation revealed that Anas had entered his wife’s home during the early hours without her knowledge, and later ambushed her the following morning on the farm. Despite his claims of provocation, stating that his wife had hit him with a stick, the court found his actions to be premeditated and sentenced him accordingly.
The victim has since been discharged from the hospital, although the physical and emotional scars from the ordeal remain.
