Construction on the Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road project has finally resumed after a temporary halt due to Ghana’s IMF bailout programme. The 23 km stretch of road is expected to link the Greater Accra Region to the Eastern Region, providing a vital transportation link between the two regions.
The GH¢195 million project is funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Ghana. President Akufo-Addo broke ground on the project in July 2022, with an initial completion timeline of 24 months.
However, the government’s request for an IMF bailout and subsequent debt restructuring led to the project’s suspension, causing difficulties for road users and commuters. Residents in the area have welcomed the project’s resumption but are urging for its expedited completion to address the health and economic challenges posed by the road’s deplorable condition.
Commuters have complained about the road’s impact on their health, citing the bumpy condition and inadequate drainage construction, which has led to frequent accidents and damage to vehicles. Project site engineer Nicholas Tieku confirmed that funding has been made available by the construction firm, enabling work to resume. He also provided revised timelines for the project’s completion, stating that the project is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
Tieku outlined the scope of work, which includes the construction of a new road, bridges, and drainage systems, as well as the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure. The resumption of the project is a significant relief to residents and commuters who have been affected by the road’s deplorable condition, and the government’s commitment to completing the project is a welcome development.
