Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has expressed his concerns over the criteria used to compile Graphic Showbiz’s recent list of the greatest rappers in Ghana. In an interview with Zionfelix, Okyeame Kwame, who was ranked third on the list, questioned the omission of notable rappers like EL, Edem, and Flowking Stone.
“What criteria did Graphic Showbiz use for that list? RAP is Rhythmic African Poetry; so did they look out for the rhythm, the ‘Africanness’ or the poetry? Did they use popularity or influence? Or is it based on being able to really rap?” he asked.
Graphic Showbiz’s list, which ranked Sarkodie, Obrafour, and Okyeame Kwame in the top three, has sparked debates in the media circles. Okyeame Kwame’s comments come 30 years after the birth of hiplife, a genre that merged hiphop and Ghanaian local music.
The list has also reignited discussions about the criteria used to determine the greatest rappers in Ghana. Other notable rappers in the industry include Lyrical Joe, Omar Sterling, Medikal, King Paluta, Ponobiom, and Obibini.
