1.2 Million Ghanaian Children Vaccinated Following Global Citizen’s Expanded Programme on Immunization

As the second anniversary of the Global Citizen Festival: Accra approaches, Global Citizen, a leading international advocacy organization, has highlighted notable achievements in Ghana resulting from commitments made at the festival.

The 2022 festival’s six-week advocacy campaign culminated in a nine-hour event across two stages in Accra’s Black Star Square and New York City’s Central Park. Global Citizen and partners announced significant pledges in health, food security, agriculture, environment, education, finance, and innovation.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, which includes over 22 UN agencies, aims to reach all regions in Ghana, addressing the needs of the most vulnerable and ensuring no one is left behind. Through Global Citizen’s advocacy, the UN committed to scaling up the Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI), resulting in the vaccination of over 1.2 million children across Ghana.

“The immunization of children is one of the world’s most effective public health tools, preventing millions of deaths worldwide,” said Charles Abani, UN Resident Coordinator, Ghana. “With partners like Global Citizen, we can continue providing this vital healthcare element to all Ghanaian children.”

“Global Citizen is proud to support the UN’s Expanded Programme of Immunisation in Ghana,” added Liz Agbor-Tabi, Global Citizen’s Vice President of Global Policy and Strategic Relationships. “This programme demonstrates that vaccinating Ghanaian children from an early age protects them from avoidable diseases, saves lives, and safeguards the wider community.”
