Mahama Vows Forensic Audit of National Cathedral Project Upon Assuming Office
- Mahama emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability in the National Cathedral project
- The proposed forensic audit aims to uncover any irregularities that may have occurred during the project's execution
- He advocates for restitution of any misappropriated funds
John Dramani Mahama, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that his administration will initiate a comprehensive forensic audit of the National Cathedral project should he be elected president in December.
During a press briefing in Accra, Mahama raised concerns regarding transparency and accountability surrounding the project. He emphasized that if the NDC comes into power, they will meticulously scrutinize every aspect of the project to ensure it adheres to principles of good governance and delivers value for money.
The proposed forensic audit, according to Mahama, will involve a detailed examination of financial transactions, procurement processes, and resource utilization related to the project. Its primary goal will be to uncover any irregularities or instances of corruption and to hold those responsible accountable.
Mahama highlighted the initial commitment that public funds would not be used for the National Cathedral, contrasting it with reports that hundreds of millions have been allocated to the project. “Where did those payments go? Were they justified? Who received them? These are questions that need answers,” Mahama remarked.
He stressed the importance of uncovering any unlawful use of public funds and ensuring that if any wrongdoing is found, those responsible are required to refund the money.
