Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has issued a stern warning to politicians, urging them to collectively tackle public discontent to avoid potential unrest and protests.
Reflecting on recent protests in Kenya during a parliamentary session on Wednesday, July 3, the Effutu MP emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of dissatisfaction regardless of political affiliations.
“The recent activism by Gen Z in Kenya serves as a stark reminder. To prevent similar situations in Ghana, it is crucial for politicians to take proactive and comprehensive steps to address the underlying issues causing public discontent,” he remarked.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that focusing solely on political strategies should not obscure the pressing need to meet public expectations. He called for a renewed commitment to a national agenda that harnesses the potential of youth and unlocks substantial development opportunities associated with a demographic dividend.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Ododiodiodio MP, who witnessed the protests in Kenya, echoed the urgency of addressing youth unemployment.
“We must not deceive ourselves. While we advocate for peace, if the public perceives political impunity as intolerable, they will react,” he cautioned.
Vanderpuye highlighted prevalent public perceptions of executive corruption, judiciary politicization, and legislative self-interest, emphasizing the potential dangers if these issues are not swiftly addressed.
