Kwahu West MCE Blames Illegal Mining For Nkawkaw Flooding
- Nkawkaw flooding leaves many homeless after three hours of torrential rain
- Kwahu West MCE blames illegal mining and construction in waterways for the disaster
- Demolition exercise to be carried out soon to prevent future occurrences, MCE promises
Torrential rains that lasted three hours on Wednesday left many residents of Nkawkaw homeless, with areas such as Nkawkaw Amanfrom, ECOWAS, Mission, Kwaku Dwira, Asaase Aban Junction, and others severely affected.
Kwahu West Municipal Chief Executive, Lawyer Yaw Owusu Addo, attributed the flooding to illegal mining activities and construction in waterways, which he said had obstructed river flow. During a visit to the affected areas, he expressed concern over the situation and promised swift action.
“Illegal mining at Kwaku Dwira has contributed to the flooding, and we will undertake a demolition exercise soon to prevent future occurrences,” he assured residents. He also warned residents of Kwaku Dwira not to drink from their wells, as the heavy rain had contaminated the water, posing a risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
“We will take swift action to address this issue and ensure the safety of our residents,” the MCE promised.
