Dubai is taking action to prevent future flooding disasters with a massive $8.2 billion investment in a new drainage network.
This comes after record-breaking April rains overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure, causing widespread damage and disruption.
The heaviest rainfall in the UAE’s history exposed vulnerabilities in Dubai’s defenses against extreme weather events.
Homes and highways were flooded, businesses were shuttered, and flights were grounded, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses.
Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, announced the ambitious project, aiming to increase the city’s rainwater drainage capacity by eight times.
The new system will be able to handle a staggering 20 million cubic meters of water per day across Dubai. Construction will be phased, with completion targeted for 2033.
“The recent extreme weather event, while unfortunate, provided valuable lessons,” Sheikh Mohammed said in a video message. “It highlighted areas where we need to improve our preparedness and ensure we are better equipped for the future.”
The devastating floods also impacted Oman, with at least two dozen people losing their lives after being trapped or swept away by rising floodwaters.
Dubai’s new drainage network signifies a proactive approach to climate resilience, aiming to safeguard the city from future downpours.
