North Tongu Lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has commenced investigations into his petition regarding the sale of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel Limited.
Ablakwa disclosed this on TV3 New Day, stating that CHRAJ had informed him of the investigation and requested him to be on standby for further information if needed.
The opposition lawmaker had petitioned CHRAJ on May 16, seeking an investigation into the sale of six SSNIT hotels, including Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.
Ablakwa alleged that documents in his possession show advanced negotiations for the sale of a 60% stake in the hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Minister Bryan Acheampong.
SSNIT, however, maintained that the selection process was transparent and complied with the Public Procurement Act, with Rock City Hotel Limited submitting the best technical and financial proposal. The Trust emphasized that the sale is still ongoing, and they will cooperate fully with CHRAJ’s investigation.
CHRAJ acknowledged Ablakwa’s petition in a letter dated May 20, promising to revert to him in due course. Ablakwa’s petition seeks to stop the sale, citing concerns about conflict of interest and potential corruption.
The lawmaker’s move follows allegations of corruption and cronyism in the deal, which has sparked public outcry. The investigation by CHRAJ is expected to shed light on the matter and ensure transparency and accountability in the sale of public assets.
